UFC 251: Coby's Picks

The day we all have been waiting for has finally come, UFC 251 is upon us and what a card it is.

This is the first of three fight cards held from July 11th–July 18th all on fight island in Abu Dhabi. Jorge Masvidal is the cards hero as he stepped in on just six days’ notice to revive the main event. Although Jorge cut 20 pounds in five days, he seems to be nothing but game for his first ever UFC title fight.

Jorge is taking on UFC Welterweight champ Kamaru Usman. This fight will go one of these two ways: Usman drags Masvidal around the cage and dominates him for 20-25 minutes or Masvidal defends the takedowns and puts the paws all over Usman. I don’t believe we will see very much action in the main event.

The other two title fights are Petr Yan vs Jose Aldo, which I get in to later in this, and the rematch of Max Holloway vs Alexander Volkanovski. That rematch is going to be a standup war and has absolute fight of the night potential.

The undercard is pretty underwhelming compared to all the other fight cards we have seen during this pandemic. Its understandable though considering the depth and strength of the main card.

My main card picks have been solid, as I stand 14-2 on the last three main cards. Check my twitter @thiskid_coby5 for full card picks and more plays.

Also, check out @smoke_sports1 for his locks and pure entertainment. Here are his picks for tonight

1. Petr Yan -225

This is the one pick Smoke and I had different. First off, I don’t think this fight goes 25 minutes, so take that how you please. However, there just isn’t a scenario in my brain in which Jose Aldo wins this fight. Yan is a very versatile fighter: he has powerful kickboxing and strong wrestling combine those and it is a rough day at the office for Jose. Aldo is known to have some trouble with precise strikers as well. Also, Aldo is insanely lucky to have this title shot considering he lost his last fight. Jose is definitely a legend in the MMA world but it is Petr Yan’s time to takeover. Overall, I believe Yan sleeps Aldo and brings Russia a UFC title.

2. Rose Namajunas -215

Its Thug Rose’s night tonight. She beat up Jessica Andrade the first time they fought until she slipped up and got slam KO’d. However, she will definitely be on the lookout for that and ready to defend. Rose took a year off to get out of the limelight of the MMA world because she felt like that hurt her performances. The former champ is rejuvenated and seeking revenge from the girl who stole her belt. Although both these girls finish fights, I don’t see this one ending before the 15 minutes expires. Rose by decision is +125 I like that as well.

I know these two locks are decent favorites, however in fighting these are normal odds for favorites like this, especially in high caliber or championship fights. A Yan/Namajunas parlay would pay out around even depending on the book, however check out my full card picks to see where you can get more value.

Whether you follow or fade us, good luck and let’s hope fight night does us well!
